It’s that time of year again! I’ve started waking up every morning feeling like THIS is the morning I call into work sick. Then 20 minutes later, after I’ve finished my oil pulling, brushed my teeth, taken my vitamins and washed my face, I feel like I do every morning: like I need some coffee.


However, this morning, with the dramatic change of seasons we’re now having in Kansas (2 weeks ago it was still 80 degrees and now we’re getting a hard freeze?!?!) my immune system is on the fritz. In fact, my body is downright upset. So to make it a little more cheerful, I’m making my favorite tea and drinking it all day. Since it tastes wonderful it’s also a lovely treat and a great break from those pumpkin spice lattes everyone is chugging.

Start boiling some water. While that’s happening, grab your favorite mug, your favorite green tea and some honey. This honey is a late summer honey I’ve had for a while. It’s local and a little bit crystalized from how cold my last place got during the winter. It’s heaven in a jar.

Put about a tablespoon of honey in the bottom of the cup. Then get out your lemon and ginger.

As far as ginger goes, there are 3 kinds you could use. I would suggest either fresh, minced or powdered. While fresh is ideal and has far more health benefits, sometimes we don’t always have fresh ginger lying around because we forgot to pick it up at the store. When I say we, I really mean me. If you don’t have it lying around powdered will do. Since I was out of fresh ginger, I used a teaspoon of powdered ginger with a little shake of ginger  juice.

Then slice up your lemon, grab a wedge and give it a squeeze! Be generous! This is your health! And now for the secret ingredient!

Cayenne for Immunitea

Yep, that’s right. Super Spicy Cayenne. Just a pinch will do. If you don’t have cayenne, you can substitute with some Sriracha! If you also do not have Sriracha, you should reevaluate your life. Then go to the grocery store and get some Cayenne and Sriracha.

Finally mix up everything at the bottom of your cup and drop in your tea bag. When your water is ready (and cooled if you’re a tea snob), pour in your water and let it steep.


I refill my cup all day until it feels overused.  It’s sweet and earthy and slightly spicy. It’s wonderful if your throat feels not so hot.



Recipe shared by a regular when I worked here in college and adapted by kaitmade

Yields: 1 cup

  • 1 T honey
  • 1-2 teaspoons ginger (see above for notes on types)
  • 1 lemon wedge
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 1 teabag of your favorite green tea
  • 8-16 oz hot water for tea

Mix first 4 ingredients in bottom of mug, add teabag, top with water and let steep for 5 minutes. Enjoy!
